Analysis of existing Double page spread from a magazine

The layout of this particular double page spread is quite organized and it is not too over the top and there is a main image and then there is some text about the image. The purpose of the article is so that the reader will know a bit more about the this particular band and the reader will also know more information and history of the magazine as well, but the article is mainly so that the reader will know more information on the band or a singer. The double page spread conforms to the house style of the magazine because the color scheme and the colors that are used on the front cover of the magazine are used throughout the magazine. The tittle of the article is called 'EXPOSURE' and it is bold and it is in capitals which shows that it will appeal to the reader and this particular article is getting to know this band a bit more and it is also getting behind the scenes of the band as well and it will reveal their secrets and it will attract more readers as well. And the effect that it has on the audience is that the audience will want to read this magazine even more because it is revealing secret information and exposing the band even more. The magazine also has some quotations from the band so the readers can read something coming directly from the band and it will make the readers want to read the magazines even more and it will be more tempting for them to read the magazine. On the double page spread there is a big blown up picture of the band and then there is some text and quotations about the band. The main image on the double page spread is of the band with five members and the color of the clothes that they are wearing are the same shades and the colors of the clothes also match the colors of the overall magazine as well, the same shades of colors also represent that they are a band and they are linked. The magazine seems like it is a pop magazine and the picture of the band shows depth because the band members are not lining up in a line, this is because some are behind and some are standing forward which shows more depth. And the band looks like a pop band because they are dressed like a pop band and they are not wearing street clothes because then that would not tie in with the genre of the magazine. On the magazine some alliteration has been used because before the paragraph starts it says 'the famous five', and this gives the article humour and you can think of other connotations linking in with the sentence 'the famous five'. The tone of the magazine is friendly because the magazine wants the audience and readers to feel comfortable; during the interview with the band the band are humorous and do make jokes. The magazines aimed at teenagers so many teenagers reading the magazine will get the jokes, language and slang contained in the text. The tone links in with the genre of the magazine because it is pop magazine and that most teenagers would read and teenagers would get the tone and language that is used in the magazine. The magazine uses colloquial language and slang including swears used but although this type of language is used teenagers that read this magazine will get the slang and swearing because some teenagers will swear and use slang on a daily basis. But there is not one hundred percent slang used, and most of the text is standard english.

The layout of this page is organized because there are pictures that are on one side and not just everywhere and by the pictures there is some text so that you know who the band or singer is. The text is organized and there are columns and rows so the reader will be able to read it easily. The purpose of the article is to inform the reader about the latest bands and singers so that the reader will learn more about them and they will also get know them more and the reader might also listen to their music and might even enjoy it as well. The double page spread conforms to the house style of the magazine because of the colors used, for example the colors used on the double page spread are blue, black and white. This suggests that the overall style of the magazine is going to be similar for example the color scheme, this article is pop/rock and so the magazine is also going to be pop/rock because it will make more sense to the people buying the magazine. The tittle of the article is called 'THE TEENAGERS' and so teenagers aged 16-25 are going to be interested in the magazine and article this is because the article will not appeal to people who are in their thirties, people in their thirties and fourties will not recognise and will not be interested in the article as well. The tittle of the article is written in capital letters and it is bold so that it stands out from everything else, because the tittle is going to draw the reader in so they will read it. The article also features some quotations from the band and other singers, this will make the reader more interested in the article because it is coming direct from the band and singer. The main pictures are bigger than the text because if the pictures look interesting then the text is going to be interesting as well. The pictures are more bigger then the text because most people tend to look at the pictures more than reading the text. There are various pictures on the article and the main picture is of a band with three members and the setting of the picture is in a typical teenager's bedroom because of the pictures and the style as well. The band are wearing clothes that teenagers would wear because they are cool and stylish and many adults do not tend to wear these kind of clothes. For example the band are wearing skinny jeans and leather jackets which are in style and considered 'cool' for many teenagers. The magazine and the band is of pop/rock genre and the clothes link in with that as well, because the clothes are current and so is the music. The magazine uses alliteration for example 'crystal castles' and this makes the article sound more interesting. The article also uses some humor to keep the reader entertained and interested in the magazine article, for example 'young, dumb and full of....filthytunes'. This is a subheading for a paragraph and when the reader reads the subheading they will want to read the rest of the article and paragraph as well. The tone of the magazine is humorous and it is also friendly to the reader but at times it can mock the bands and singers, and this links in with the pop/rock genre because it reflects the attitude of the teenagers who read the magazine. The magazine article uses colloquial language and standard english because the magazine is for teenagers and younger adults so it has to use language that they will understand so they will want to read and buy the magazine again.

This is an existing contents page of a pop magazine, the contents page looks a bit busy because there are three pictures and there is a lot of text as well which gives the reader an inside view of the magazine. The contents page uses less color so it does not look over the top, there are only three main colors which are white, black and pink. And the colors of the contents page usually match the cover of the magazine. The target audience of the magazine looking from the contents page looks like it is for 16-30 year olds because the contents page looks mature because of the color schemes used and it does not look like the type of magazine that children will read because it is more mature. The contents page looks organized because the writing and pictures are not all mixed or muddled together, this is because the pictures are on one side with words and the writing is on one side and the writing is the same color so you will know that it is linked and the headings are written in bold so you will know what each paragraph is about before you read it. The most important features in the magazine are in bold so if there is a story that everyone will want to read about; and it is in a different bright color and it is also bold and big, for example 'FASHION ROCKS'. The images and writing and the way that the contents page is set out relates to the target audience of the magazine because the colors that are used are young and the pictures are young and they will appeal to young people as well. The features of the magazine that will help it to sell. The contents page is filled with famous names and information and so when people see the contents page they will want to buy it because it has famous names and pictures on there and it also has a lot of information and stories. The features of the magazine are easy to locate by using the contents page because the headings are bold so you will know what story is on a certain page because it is bold and it is easy to see as well.

This is a contents page of a classical magazine because the pictures on the contents page are more mature and there are various instruments on there which are part of the orchestra. The contents page is more organized and it is not over crowded with text and big pictures, the target audience of the magazine looking from the contents page is for a mature audience so it looks like it is for people aged 19-45 because young teenagers don't tend to listen or be interested in classical music or anything classical. The way that the magazine has been set out and the pictures used on the magazine reflects the target audience of the magazine because the layout of the magazine is organized and it is not messy and all over the place and  teenagers and children tend to be messy rather than adults. The information on the contents page is set out in rows which shows that the magazine is for a mature audience and the pictures link in with the layout and target audience of the magazine because you don't see teenage rappers in street clothing; the clothes that the people are wearing in the magazine are more formal like suits. The feature that persuades the reader to buy the magazine is that the contents page is organized and it is not crowded with information so when you open the contents page you will know exactly what it is about and it will take you only a few minutes to read it, but if it was cramped then it will take you longer and you might not end up buying it as well. The contents page is very serious because there is no slang and this reflects the target audience of the magazine which is serious and mature. The features on the contents page are easy to locate because it is organized and the text is in columns on both sides of the page and there are also pictures on both sides of the page in a pattern this is because the whole contents page follows a pattern because it is organized and mature. The color scheme of this magazine is simple and not over the top and i also like the design of the contents page so i want my contents page to be his kind of style.

Analysis of ‘Blender’ magazine (Fergie-pop)

The genre of the magazine is pop and R n B because this issue covers all types of genres especially pop music. The target audience of this magazine is men and women who like pop and R n B music, the cover image of this magazine appeals to both men and women. The target audience of this magazine is people aged eighteen to thirty and both men and women will read this magazine. I can tell that the magazine appeals to both men and women and it is for people aged eighteen to thirty because of the cover image because it appeals both to men and women.

The main image of this magazine is of a singer Fergie and it relates to the music genre of the magazine because she is a pop singer and is in a band that is pop/R n B. The image is at the centre of the magazine, there are no specific angles used and there is no depth used as well. The color scheme links in with what the model is wearing, for example the model is wearing white, black and blue and the colors on the magazines that are used are also blue, black, white and the color gold compliments all the colors used as well. For my magazine I will want to use these colors as well because they go well with each other and they also compliment each other as well. The image relates to the target audience because women will want to be like her and the success that she is having and men will want to be with her and listen to her music.

The magazine is called ‘Blender’ and this reflects the content and target audience of the magazine because it is about music and in the magazine it tells you about the worst and best lists of music In the country so the name of the magazine ‘Blender’ reflects the content and information in the magazine because it combines the best and worst music and tells its audience about it and the magazine also covers a wide range of genres as well which can reflect the name of the magazine. There are only two types of fonts on the cover of the magazine which keeps it simple and there are also three types of colors as well which keeps it simple and not too over the top. There are various sizes on the cover of the magazine for example the less important information is in small and the important information is big. The main image covers most of the magazine because when people see the magazine they will concentrate on the image more then the information.   

Analysis of ‘Billboard’- (Taylor Swift-Country)

The music genre of this particular magazine is country but this magazine does all types of genres but for this particular issue the focus is country. The target audience of this magazine is girls starting from the ages of fifteen and onwards, boys will not be interested in this magazine because it is too girly for them and the songs that this singer sings will not relate to them either. You can tell this because of the songs that she sings and her image as well.

The main image is of the singer/songwriter Taylor Swift and the image is at the centre of the magazine which shows that she is the main focus of the magazine,she is on the side and looking at the reader from the corner of her eye. The image relates to the music genre of country music because she looks natural and the colors that are used are light they are not dark colors; the colors are white, yellow etc which are bright colors. The image is at the centre of the page and it takes most of the room. The make-up and clothes all look natural because the make-up is not dark and the clothes are white, which are light and not dark. The colors that are used are white and yellow; the colors contribute to the mood of the image because the magazine is calm and the colors that are used are also calm. The image relates to the target audience because she looks young and pretty and many teenage girls would want to look like her and would love to be her as well, she is also young and the target audiences of this magazine are also young girls.

The magazine is called ‘Billboard’ which talks about the top singles in America and the celebrities that are on the magazines have had a big number one single or they have made some impact on the music industry. The font on the magazine is the same style and there are two types of colors that the font is in which is white and yellow, and the sizes of the fonts are also different because the important stories and phrases are big and bold and the less important stories and phrases are small and not bold. And the effect of this is that it creates emphasise to the important stories. The image on the magazine is at the centre of the magazine, which shows the importance of the image.


I will want my magazine cover to look like this because i like the way that it is set out and i also like the color scheme as well.

Analysis of Rolling Stones- (lil Wayne rock)

The target audience of this magazine is people who love rock music and who love to listen to the latest rap and rock music. The target audience for this magazine is people aged sixteen to late twenties. This is because people below the age of sixteen will not understand the language and the language will also contain swears bad language that is not suitable for them.

The main image of this magazine is an RNB and hip hop star ‘lil Wayne’ he is an iconic rapper that the majority of people reading this magazine will understand and recognize. The iconic star on the magazine is looking down and is topless which links in with the target audience of the magazine because it is not formal. The image has a movement because he is looking down which makes the audience and readers of the magazine to look down as well and it makes the reader want to see and read what ever he is looking at. The image relates to the music genre of the magazine because of the way he is dressed and because he is in the RNB and rock industry. The image of the magazine is at the centre of the magazine there are no angles and there is no depth as well. The subject matter in the magazine is not wearing any clothes there is limited mise en scene and he is only wearing a hat and necklace; this suggests that he is giving out a message to readers and the audience. The subject matter has got a lot of tattoos on as well which appeals to the people who like this type of genre. The colors that are used in this magazine are the background is a mixture of cream and light brown and the mast head of the magazine is bright yellow which makes it stand out and it also brings more attention to it and when people see the magazine they will see the mast head first, and they will be excited by the iconic wrapper on the cover and they will still remember the name of the magazine. The mood of the magazine links in with the types of raps and music lil Wayne makes which is not happy and colorful but sad and focuses on the violence and bad things in life. The image relates to the target audience because the image is of someone that young people have seen and heard of, and the way he is dressed also relates to the way teenagers and young people in their twenties sometimes dress.

The magazine is called ‘Rolling Stone’ and rolling stone was an iconic band that everyone knew and the magazine also relates to that because the images on the magazine and the magazine itself is something that everyone knows and has heard of and the celebrities on the magazines is also something that everyone knows about and has heard of. The typeface is the same color and size on the cover of the magazine, but some of the strap lines are bigger and bolder than others. And this suggests that on the entire magazine the style is the same, which shows that the magazines are linked.

The magazine is called 'KERRANG' and it is a onomatopoeia because if you a pronounce the word it sounds like the sound of a music instrument like a guiter. And so the mast head links with the theme of music. The type of reader that the magazine is targeting is people who like to listen to rock music beacuse it is a rock magazine; the people who are buying this magazine will be familiar with it because the magazine also has a music channel. I know that the magazine is targeting people who love rock music because the band on the cover of the magazine is a rock band so people buying this magazine will automatically know that the image is of a rock band. The target audience of this magazine is people aged sixteen to thirty because people below or over the ages will not understand the concept of the magazine and they will not recognise the vocabulary used, for example 'sickest' and 'bodom' this is type of language adults will not understand and they will also not recognise the images and the rock band.


The main image on the magazine cover is of a rock band and all of the members of the rock band have eye contact with the reader so they are interacting with the reader. The band members are all dressed formally because they are wearing suits. And although this is a rock magazine and they are wearing suits, the suits are black and white to reinforce the rock image that they have. The band members are not all lining in a straight line. This is because some of the band members are forward and some are back, this creates more depth and it also gives the message to the reader that the band members that are forward might be the well known ones so they might be the lead singers and the ones that are at the back they are not the well known ones. There are also various pictures of other rock singers and bands with a variety of angles and shots, for example one picture is a worms eye view because the camera is looking up at the musician. 


The magazine does not have any straplines which is unusual for a mgazine but the magaizne does have a kicker which is bold and big so it stands out. And the kicker mentions the main stories the magazine has. And the magazine also has a skyline mentioning some rock band names or any other infromation the magazine has. The main colours of the magazine are gold, black and white and the colours all compliment each other as well and they also link in with each other as well, for example the mast head is white and so are the suits of the band members. The magazine looks expensive because of the colour gold, if you see an item or a piece of jewllery that is gold you will automatically think it is expensive and this magazine is gold whch gives it authority and status.  



My completed Evaluation

To begin the work of my magazine cover firstly I planned what I wanted to be on my magazine cover and then I drew the pictures and I wrote down my strap lines or any writing I wanted to be on my magazine cover. Then I started to take my pictures around school. I took pictures of students doing work, students doing P.E and teachers consulting with students as well. I took the pictures in a range of angles to create depth and I also remembered and included the rule of three in my pictures as well. In my pictures I included a wide range of angles for example worm’s eye view of the school so the camera is down and is looking up at the school.

 I then went on photo shop and started to start my magazine cover. Firstly I chose my main image I wanted my main image to represent the school and also contain some depth as well; so for my main image I chose two teachers talking and working with a student, the image is not just at the centre the picture contains some depth and I have also included the rule of three as well. I then started to edit my main image I cut out the background and put a background color, which is pure blue violet and then I chose the color of my masthead to be yellow because both of these colors compliment each other and they also go well with each other as well. I then chose three pictures to put at the bottom of the page which were a worms eye view of the school, a girl doing her work and finally a teacher and student talking and working with each other. I then put a kicker in which said ‘exam results’ and I made it stand out so I made it bold and in capitals so it will stand out from everything else. I then wrote my strap lines; before I wrote the strap lines I did some research before hand on the school website to see what the latest stories were and what was currently happening in the school. So then after I did my research I wrote about the LGS radio, the school council elections, basketball academy, sixth form lessons, teachers and the canteen because these were the latest stories and the latest events happening at Lordswood Girls School. And I also wrote down the school website in the corner of the magazine because during my research I found out that magazines have some kind of contact information so I wrote the school website in black and bold at the corner of the page. I only used three colors and two types of font in my magazine cover because I did not want it to be too crowded and too over the top and I only used two fonts as well. The things that I could improve on next time would be using more varieties of angles and I also made the school website font too stretched. 

I then started my contents page I kept the color scheme and the fonts the same so that the magazine and cover and the contents page can be easily recognisable and they also go together and link with each other as well because of the color schemes. I chose to put four pictures on my contents page; I put pictures of the canteen, a teacher, and students doing P.E and I also turned them around on an angle as well. I also put some information about what information is going to be in the magazine like the magazine is going to be about the teachers, staff, sixth formers etc. The things that I would improve on next time on my contents page would be to put more effects on and to make It look more interesting and fun so students and sixth formers will want to read it.
